This is something of a throwback to a previous deviation of mine... same technique, although this time I went in to it with a clear intention of what I wanted. I think I like this one much better.

I was going through my mp3 player and found my folder for Fiona Apple. I remembered seeing her in concert about 10 years ago at the Taft Theater in Cincinnati, and she opened her set with "The Child is Gone". The title is a direct reference to the lyrics of that song.

Curves / 2 separate noise filters / more curves / a little shadow/highlight / levels

It's well done and striking

Beautiful, Steve. And the title strikes home for me, as well. Both of my kids soon leave for a visit away from home. Will be their first and it is hard to let go.

I like the varying foci of the leaves. What specific result do you look for when you use curves? (I'm just curious what feels folks are going for when using certain tools.)

When I use curves, it's usually to make a more precise adjustment to contrast. Using the contrast/highlight adjustment doesn't allow as much fine control. And since digital cameras still lack a decent dynamic range, I use curves adjustments quite a bit.

I also have a few curves settings saved for certain looks. For instance, I have a curves setting that I use to create a C41/E6 cross-process look. I also have a couple curves settings saved for my infrared photos.

Awesome information, thank you so much. I'll have to look deeper into curves. I've only used them a little and more trial and error than anything. It's nice to know what can be done.
